Description

Newark, NJ- Newark Banking & Insurance Co. $1 18__ G24 Proof PMG About Uncirculated 53.
The Newark Banking & Insurance Co. was incorporated with this title in 1804. It became the Newark Banking Co. in 1859 and was, in turn, succeeded by the National Newark Banking Company which was chartered on June 21, 1865. The $1 features a vignette of a Native American woman gazing at the encroachment of "Civilization" in the form of a distant city and several forms of transportation including a canal boat, passenger train, and steamboat. A portrait of Franklin at lower right, small vignette of an eagle at bottom center, and a stylized eagle/1 denominational counter complete the design. The note is printed on India paper and has a number of small edge repairs that are not blatantly obvious. There were four examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
