Description

New Orleans, LA- Geo. W. Gregor & Co. $1 ND (ca. 1861-62) Vlack 1360 PMG Very Fine 20.
George Gregor dealt in watches, jewelry, silverware, guns, pistols, cutlery, and fancy goods at a store which was located at the corner of Camp and Canal Streets in the heart of New Orleans. This started out as an advertising note, but was converted to a $1 scrip note by the enterprising Gregor via some stamps indicating that it was redeemable in current funds when presented in sums of $5. Additionally, CENTS was added below each of the upper corner 100 counters and a large red ONE DOLLAR was added across the face. An interesting reversal of the usual sequence where a worthless bank note was converted to an advertising piece. PMG mentions that the note has been previously mounted with faint evidence on the back.
