Description

Baton Rouge, LA- Baton Rouge, Grosse-Tete & Opelousas Railroad Co. $1 July 1, 1873 PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ.
The railroad was chartered in 1853 and was operating some 28 miles of track by the outbreak of the Civil War. It provided rail services until May 1862 when Baton Rouge fell to Union forces. It then ceased operations and moved its rolling stock to the west end of the line in Livonia, LA. The line survived the ravages of war, but struggled with damage caused by floods in 1867, the loss of many of its agricultural customers, and the emancipation of sixty-nine slaves which it had owned. Legal battles raged into the 1870s and all of the road's assets were finally sold to the Southern Pacific Railroad Company in 1883. This note probably represents one of the railroad's final efforts to stave off failure during the Panic of 1873. The note was payable four months after issue on November 1, 1873, and was receivable for freight shipments or travel on the railroad. The design features a small vignette of a train approaching a bridge at center and another of a Native American warrior at left. The note is covered by a dark maroon overall tint and has a green ornamental back displaying the denomination.
