Description

Wapello, IA- City of Wapello $5 Aug. 31, 1857 Oakes 109-4 PMG Very Fine 30.
The intricately detailed $5 in this lot, produced by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, features a laborer chopping down a tree at left and a mill turning raw lumber into usable building materials at right. A wagon fully loaded with wooden boards and drawn by two oxen is in the foreground. A large red-brown "5" protector is observed at center. We have auctioned a handful of notes of this design and denomination previously, but the type becomes a bit challenging to locate in grades above low VF. In August 2025, we auctioned a PMG VF 20 certified piece which brought $384. Three punch cancellations are present at lower right on our current mid-grade offering.
