Description

Columbus, GA- Chattahoochee Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia $20 Nov. 16, 1840 G12 PMG Very Fine 20.
This short-lived concern, which was probably more of a bank than a railroad, only stayed afloat from around 1838-41. By 1841, the company was embroiled in a number of lawsuits by individuals seeking recovery of funds and was ultimately placed in receivership by authorities in August of that year. The $20 design is classic Rawdon, Wright & Hatch work, with a vignette of Mercury delivering coins to a seated allegorical woman perhaps representing Moneta. Both end panels contain large cotton plants and a small doghead representing Fidelity is at bottom center.
