Description

T31 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 243 PCGS Banknote Very Fine 25.
A total of 58,860 notes of this design were issued between November 13, 1861, and May 15, 1862. Production by Southern Bank Note Company (aka the New Orleans Office of ABNCo) was abruptly and permanently terminated with the fall of New Orleans to a federal naval task force at the end of April 1862. As was standard practice, existing pre-war vignettes were used to expedite the design and production process. The center vignette features five allegorical women representing Commerce, Agriculture, Justice, Liberty, and Industry. A young woman stands at left and a large statue of Washington is at right. A vibrant orange 5-FIVE-5 protector completes the design and importantly it shows no signs of oxidation.
