Description

T22 $10 1861 PF-1 Cr. 150 PMG Very Fine 25.
While the Southern Bank Note Co. (in actuality - the New Orleans branch of the ABNCo.) stumbled out of the blocks producing its first notes (T5 and T6) for the Confederacy, it began turning out high quality intaglio engraved notes such as this $5. The note used pre-war vignettes: a Native American family at center flanked by Thetis at left and a Native American woman standing holding an ear of corn and an X at right. A red-orange X-TEN-X protector was added as a counterfeit deterrent. Only 58,860 notes were issued before the fall of New Orleans, at the end of April 1862, brought an abrupt end to production. This example is problem-free and well printed, with bright unoxidized protectors. All of the Southern Bank Note Company produced notes are very popular and nice problem-free examples, such as this one, are becoming more difficult to acquire.
