Kaskaskia, IL- Bank of Cairo at Kaskaskia $2; $5 1840-41 Fine-Very Fine.
The bank was organized in 1839, based upon an old 1816 charter that had never been activated. Its career was not a long one, with the bank placed in liquidation in early February, 1843. The $2 note features vignettes of a farm woman with her baby in the fields, Ceres, and a Native American hunter while the $5 features a fanciful vignette of three putti engaged in various activities and an eagle and shield vignette as well as several oval cameo-like medallion head FIVE and 5 counters.
