Description

Very Rare Planters Bank of Alabama Note-Ex Newman

Florence, AL - Planters Bank of Alabama $10 April 20, 1839 AL-20 G10 Rosene 90-1 PCGS Fine 15.
A very rare note from this well-collected state and town that originated in the Newman Collection. Though not SENC listed in Haxby, its condition towers over the plated example. That note, missing chunks from the right end, barely nets a grade of "Fair." Interestingly styled and engraved, with the Western Bank Note Co., Cincinn.,O/Woodruff, Tucker & Co. imprint. At the left end is a fierce standing Indian. Top center, a cotton wagon heads down the road toward an awaiting steamboat. Beautifully accomplished signatures, this note has well-balanced eye appeal. This realized $1,057.50 in our Newman Part VI sale in April 2015. Coincidentally, at the same CSNS event, a lesser example realized $1,762.50 a day before. Selling two in a span of 24 hours at the same auction of this rarity was a curious thing, likely never to be repeated. An excellent specialist's opportunity to obtain a well pedigreed and strong grade example of this interesting rarity.
