Albert Gallatin Autographed Letter Signed as Secretary of the Treasury Regarding Land Sales in Opelousas Louisiana Territory January 13, 1808 Not Graded.
Treasury Department; January 13, 1808. A letter to John Thompson, Register of the Land Office in Opelousas, Louisiana (Territory) that aims to reduce fraud in public sales of land. It reads, in part, "Whenever a tract of Land shall be struck to the highest Bidder, he must upon the spot and before you proceed to sell another Tract, pay the deposit of one twentieth part of the purchase Money. If he shall not do it, his bid must be considered as null, and the Land be again set up for sale, crying it at the price offered by the Bidder next below him." Signed, "Albert Gallatin. With a second "Free" franking signature of Gallatin on the address cover. Juncture hole from where the two pages of the bifolium were sealed together and then pulled apart. Modest paper tone throughout. Gallatin was a longstanding Secretary of the Treasury for both Jefferson and Madison from 1801-14.
