Description

Extremely Large Pre-1908 McKinley Plaque

Macerated Currency President McKinley With an Interesting Letter Attached.
This McKinley in profile plaque measures over eight inches tall and nearly seven inches wide. It is clearly a pre-1908 production, with hundreds of currency specks visible, including identifiable bits of Brown Backs. Most of the back is covered by a taped-on typed 1956 letter that reads, "Dear Ruth... we were going through a lot of old pictures and keepsakes the other day and came across this plaque of President McKinley. I thought you might like to have it... it was given to Mother when we were in Washington in 1899 by our uncle who worked in the Treasury Department. It seems that at that time the Bureau of Engraving and Printing destroyed old paper money by chewing it up somehow, and then they made some sort of plaques or other objects with the pulp. So McKinley is made of I don't know how many million dollars all ground up! They no longer do it, I believe, and anyhow, this is nearly an antique. If you don't care about having it, just toss it out. It has outlived its interest for us... it may have some interest to you(sic) classes." The plaque is in exceptional condition and has its original faded pink ribbon passed through two purpose-made holes for hanging. McKinley has the word "Protection" above his head and "Prosperity" at the bottom of the plaque.
