Description
Emeline Furnace, PA- Emeline Furnace Store 50¢ 184__ Hoober 111-4 Remainder PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.Emeline Furnace was located 1.5 miles west of Dauphin. It was built in 1835 and was perfectly located for shipment of its output, being located about 100 feet from one of the locks on the Pennsylvania Canal. Some reports indicate that the iron furnace was closed around 1850. The note, clearly intended as a company store issue, payable in merchandise, features a vignette of a busy harbor scene flanked by others of Liberty seated at left and a sailor standing by a huge anchor at right. This design is typical of stock notes that were widely sold by Manly & Orr during the 1830s, with the customer-specific text later added to notes ordered. PMG notes an annotation (an old Dick Hoober penciled price) on the back which has no impact on anything.
