Description

Salem, MA- Mercantile Bank $5 186_ G40 Proof PMG About Uncirculated 53, 4 POCs.
The Mercantile Bank opened in 1826 and remained in business until 1865 when it became the Mercantile National Bank of Salem. The $5 design, a product of ABNCo, featured a center vignette of a Native American woman by a federal shield, eagle, and other symbols of the nation. This is flanked by a vignette of a sailor and mechanic at left and a sailor standing by a capstan at right. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. These four POCs have removed paper from the note, but not any from the cardstock. PMG mentions that the note is repaired (the edges have been reinforced and reconstructed in places), but this does not have a major impact on the note's visual appeal.
