Description

African American Ephemera Piece

Lowell, MA- Adams & Byam "Advertising Note" ND (ca. 1875-1878) PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.
Sumner Byam is originally listed as a clerk at 70 Merrimack Street in the 1872 Lowell city directory. The firm of Adams Bros. is listed in the 1874 directory as being in the shoes and boots business. at the same address. The following year marks the first appearance of the firm of Adams & Byam, located at 70-72 Merrimack Street. Reading between the lines suggests that one of the brothers either retired, died, or otherwise left the business in 1874-75 and was replaced by Byam who had been clerking at the business. This partnership was relatively short-lived with Byam striking out on his own by circa 1879-80. This advertising card, which has a vague resemblance to currency, is promoting the cable screw wire method of making shoes rather than sewn or pegged methods of joining soles and seams. A rather peaceful winter skating scene appears on the face while an African American and caucasian worker extol the virtues of cable screw wire for shoes and boots on the back. PMG mentions a tear (in the upper left corner) which is of minimal consequence.
