Description

Norwich, CT- Norwich Bank $2 Feb. 1(?), 1860 G164 Very Good-Fine;
Voluntown, CT Granite Bank $1 Nov. 2, 1857 G2a Fine.
The Norwich Bank $2 design features Liberty, Justice, and a third allegorical woman seated by the Connecticut coat of arms at center. Justice is seated in an ornate large 2 at left and Liberty is seated in a similar 2 at right. A small vignette of an eagle is at bottom center. The note is fully issued with three of the four corner tips missing. This note is, nonetheless, surprisingly rare, with this being our first offering of this note in issued form.
The Granite Bank was a non-existent bank designed to place large amounts of notes into circulation with no intent of ever redeeming them. It was in operation around 1857. The $1 design features a large vignette of a farmer plowing with a mixed team of oxen and a horse flanked by oval portraits of George and Martha Washington and a large red ONE protector. (Total: 2 notes)
