IOOF 1865 Receipt / Printer Advertising Note
New York, NY- American Odd Fellow $2 Receipt Jan. 2, 1865 PMG
Very Fine 25.This well crafted receipt was issued for an 1865 one year subscription to the American Odd Fellow, a monthly magazine published by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The face features Liberty or America standing with a sword and shield as depicted on the first federal $20 Demand and Legal Tender Notes at left and a beehive representing Industry at right. The entire green back is devoted to a detailed advertisement for J.W. Orr, Ornamental Job Printer, who apparently also served as the editor and proprietor of the publication. PMG mentions tears that appear to be limited to several small edge nicks that are not overly distracting.
