Description

Philadelphia, PA- Allegheny House "5" Advertising Note ND (ca. 1846-47) Vlack 3770 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
From newspaper items, it appears that the hotel was constructed in 1842 and apparently failed around 1848 when its contents were sold at a Sherriff's Sale. It reopened in 1849 under new ownership and remained in business until the building was torn down in 1880. This advertising note dates from 1846-47 (John Hortor & Son announced the opening of the hotel in February, 1846, with a new owner listed in late August, 1847). The design features a passenger train vignette flanked by portraits of Franklin and Washington. The passenger train vignette is actually signed by the lithographer In Stone by Wm. H. Reese, 17 1/2 S. 5th Street. This is the only example of this note that we have offered in our public auctions.
