Description

Dudley, PA- Unknown Merchant Issuer $1; $5 186__ Remainders Very Fine; Crisp Uncirculated.
These large format scrip notes were payable in merchandise "at the counter of my store." Dudley was in the middle of significant coal mining and transportation operations and it is quite possible that this was a company store-style establishment. The $1, featuring a coal train vignette, is printed in green with a POC cancel in the signature line as well as a body hole at top right and a foreign substance on the right half of the note. The $5 note features Liberty seated by a federal shield and eagle and is printed in red with a single POC in the bottom right margin. (Total: 2 notes)
