Description

DuBois, PA- (John DuBois) 50¢ (2); $1; $5 187__ (ca. 1870s) Remainders Very Good-Fine or Better.
DuBois was heavily involved in the development of lumbering operations in DuBois, PA beginning in the early 1870s and continued expanding his business with other enterprises such as lumber mills, a box mill, and iron works. These notes were intended for use in a "company store" style operation. Each note has, presumably, a portrait of Mr. DuBois and a vignette of a large factory. Each denomination is printed in a different color. The two 50¢ notes in this lot appear to be printed in two different colors; dark blue and blue-green. It is unclear whether this was intended or is the result of colors fading a bit over the last 150 or so years. The blue ink 50¢ note is signed by John DuBois, but since this example does not have a full date or serial number, we will consider it as a remainder. (Total: 4 notes)
