Description
Engraving Through the Ages. On January 15, 1915 a Mr. Charles Skinner of the American Bank Note Co. hand wrote a letter in part, "At the time the transfer was made from the American Bank Note Co. Building in Trinity Place to the present Buildings in the Bronx Borough, a number of Old Papers came into my hands. Among the papers enclosed a receipt made by your Uncle for work done in Anno Domini 1833. This was of considerable interest to me, but I conceived it would be of greater interest to you . . .." This lot contains the letter and its original envelope, as well as two 1833 pay receipts from Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Co., both signed by James Smillie. They show the original cost to R.W.H&Co. for a number of engravings, including "View on the Mohawk $20," and "Whaling View $25." An irreplaceable bit of bank-note history. Est. 500up
