Description
Important set of progress proofs of G.F.C. Smillie's engraved portrait of Washington, after Gilbert Stuart, that originally appeared on the Series 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Notes, and has come down to the present on the small size currency as the most widely seen image of Washington in history. This vignette measures approximately one and seven-eighth inches by one and one-half inches on India paper mounted on card. The back of the earlier die state has the reverse blue imprints 865733 and Nov 24 1917, and a pencil notation attributing this work to Smillie. The later state bears the blue imprints 892899 and May 2 1918. The earlier die state is in excellent condition, while the later die state has only the most superficial foxing, mentioned only for completeness. These items would add considerably to an exhibit of modern U.S. currency!
