Description

Scarce Chefoo Branch Issue

China Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation 10 Dollars 1.9.1922 Pick S317a.
The elusive local issue from Chefoo, today known as Yantai in Shandong Province. While the area was a major trading port for a variety of countries including Japan, Germany (who formerly occupied the nearby Tsingtao/Kiau Chau Bay), Russia, and the United Kingdom, the well capitalized HSBC did not gain a strong foothold in the area. As politics dominated the air in the post-World War I years, the province was still under heavy influence of the Japanese. The HSBC probably tried to gain a position in the area in 1922 after the conclusion of the Shandong Problem, but eventually failed with the Japanese choking off Western interests in the years before World War II. As a result, only one series was issued for Chefoo, with this being the largest denomination.

Excellent colors are seen on both sides of this elusive note which is one of the finest notes handled by PMG with the all original EPQ designation. Views of the HSBC buildings in Hong Kong and Shanghai are featured on the back. PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ.
