Description
Front & Back Printing Plates - Russian Government Credit Note
Russia Government Credit Note 100 Rubles 1918 Pick 40 / S1249 Face and Back Printing Plates. The Russian Government Credit Notes are arguably among the prettiest designs featured on Russian currency. A vignette of Agriculture graces the face plate, while the back plate features the state emblem of the Russian Provisional Government; a two-headed eagle over Tauride Palace. A multiple impression process was used to print the face of these notes. This plate represents all of the design details printed in black. The underprint, in brown, featured the ornate lathework that helped thwart counterfeiting attempts. Serial numbers and signatures were added in yet another impression. The back plate is complete, as it was applied with a single brown ink impression.
The appeal of these plates cannot be overstated as the incuse engraved details still contract nicely against the polished steel. A three dimensional visual appearance is created and unequaled by the printed notes themselves. Russian specialists will be enamored by this offering, as the face plates from the 500 Ruble and 1000 Ruble denominations also included in this auction. This front plate and back plate were used for printing of the 1918 dated Credit Notes, listed as 40 and S1249 in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money references. They are free of the pitting and corrosion often seen on the few remaining steel printing plates from this time period. Included in the lot is a PMG graded example of the printed note, S1249 as a visual reference for the finished product. It is graded Choice Uncirculated 64.
