Description
Fr. 259 $5 1886 Silver Certificate CGA Gem Uncirculated 66. Fr. 259 is the second scarcest of the Silver Dollar Backs, with fewer than 30 examples known in all grades combined. For comparison, both Fr. 261 and Fr. 263 have well over 100 pieces known, with the Fr. 263 tally approaching 200. We sold this note once before, in October of 1998, when we described it, "This is the single finest example of this rare Silver Dollar Back number that we can ever recall seeing. It's broadly margined and strictly original, with deep embossing and beautiful colors. This pristine beauty bears serial number B24. This note represents a combination of rarity, quality and special interest that adds immeasurably to an important collection." In that sale, the note was estimated at $10,000-up, and it realized $17,600. We would not be at all surprised if this synergy of beauty, rarity and low-serial-number were to push this note to or beyond . . .Auction Info
