China Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China, Shanghai 1 Mexican Dollar 15.9.1898 Pick S191 S/M#Y11 PMG Choice Fine 15.
An absolutely elusive variety. These early notes issued by the Chartered Bank were denominated in Mexican Dollars as a way to unify all the different currencies circulating in the port city of Shanghai. This eventually gave way to later issues in "Local" currency, which meant the majority of these notes were redeemed. This example as an issued note with no major problems is expected to excite many collectors.
