Description

Federal Gasoline Ration Coupons 1 Unit ND (1974) Uncut Vertical Pair Four Examples.
These are all Series A coupons and each example exhibits bold embossing. The United States was the victim of an oil embargo by the Middle East nations of OPEC. The Federal Energy Administration planned a gasoline rationing system in anticipation of a crippling fuel shortage. There was a fuel shortage, but not crippling. These ration coupons remained in storage. In mid-June 1984, following the belief that Washington's portrait could fool certain vending machines into mistaking the coupons for dollar bills, the federal government opted to destroy the coupons instead of offering them for sale to collectors. Although the entire population of gasoline ration coupons were supposedly destroyed, someone at the Pueblo Army Depot in Colorado liberated a limited number for the ultimate benefit of today's collectors. Choice Crisp Uncirculated or better. (Total: 4 items)
