Gem R Experimental Silver Certificate Star Note
Fr. 1609* $1 1935A R Silver Certificate Star Note. PCGS Banknote
Gem Unc 65 PPQ.This offering is a great new addition to the census of this very rare Silver Certificate star that has just 37 pieces in the latest census. In 1944, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing conducted a test using a special new paper. To conduct the test, 1.184 million 1935A Silver Certificates with the special paper were overprinted with a large "S" at lower right on the face. The "S" was used for the special paper while a control group of the same number were printed with a large "R" for regular paper. The experiment included the printing of 12,000 star notes for each variety. When the experiment was complete, the BEP found the results were inconclusive, and survivors of the replacement notes are particularly rare in all grades. Well margined and pack fresh, this offering is quite comparable to the PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ example that we auctioned two years ago for $9,600.
