Description

One of Four Known in Public Hands

Fr. 1132-A $500 1918 Federal Reserve Note PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30.
Surviving $500 1918 FRNs are, with few exceptions, uniformly rare. This note, which is new to the Track & Price Census, brings the total number of notes known to five, with one example being sequestered in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution and one serial number (A6333A) which is not recorded. The design is classic, with a portrait of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, engraved by Charles Schlecht dominating the face and a large vignette of DeSoto Discovering the Mississippi appearing on the back. The note has seen a bit of time in commerce with some casual soiling and minimal signs of handling, but it still possesses boldly printed design elements with good color on paper with nice margins and registration. We auctioned a bright Very Fine 35 example in our 2022 Long Beach Expo US Currency Signature Auction for $50,400 and believe that our conservative estimate for this will be met or exceeded.
