Description

A Handsome Example of a Rare 1880 $50 Silver Certificate

Fr. 328 $50 1880 Silver Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
PMG has graded thirteen examples of this rare number, with seven of them below the level of this strikingly beautiful, large brown seal blue serial number Edward Everett $50 silver. Track & Price reports a total census of 26 examples. Of those 26, only 14 individual notes have reached the public auction block. Only three of those 14 examples have graded 30 by the two major services. Those three comparably-graded notes realized $27,500 in 2006, $54,000 in 2015, and $105,000 in 2016. This piece, which is new to the census, will likely fall between the 2006 and the 2015 prices. PMG has commented, "Minor Repairs," on the back of the holder. While we are not entertaining the possibility that they are incorrect, even extremely close inspection, candling, and consulting with several trusted paper money mediums fails to disclose their location. Edward Everett was the single-most famous orator of the mid-nineteenth century. He was Harvard-educated, became a US Senator and was Secretary of State in a career that spanned several decades. He was the featured speaker at the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863.
