One of Three Face and Back Fr. 318 Proof Pairs

Fr. 318 Hessler 823 $20 1891 Silver Certificate Face and Back Proofs PCGS Banknote Superb Gem Unc 67 PPQ; Gem Unc 66 EPQ.
Both well preserved Proofs have earned Gem EPQ grades with the face having just a touch more in margin width all the way around. Each Proof is printed on India paper and mounted on cardstock. The face has two blue ink serial numbers of E00000. Also, both Proofs previously resided in the Harry E. Jones and Caine Collections. We auctioned these two sharply printed pristine Proofs previously in January 2003. Hessler 823 has a recorded population of three pairs of Face and Back Proofs on page 95. The portrait is of Daniel Manning who was appointed by President Cleveland as Secretary of the Treasury. Manning served in that office from March 8, 1885, to March 31, 1887, when he resigned due to ill health. He died on December 24, 1887. Manning was a fiscal conservative and advocate of the gold standard. A few years after his death, his portrait was placed on a $20 Silver Certificate. (Total: 2 notes)
