Little Known Certificate of Deposit Issue

Fr. UNL Similar to Hessler X134D $5,000 186_ United States Treasury Certificate of Deposit Designated Depository of the United States Office of the Assistant Treasurer of the United States Cincinnati Remainder PCGS Extremely Fine 45.
These little known Certificate of Deposits are found on pages 89-90 in the second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes by Gene Hessler. These certificates were deposited with the Assistant Treasurers in Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia. They were issued in denominations of $100, $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 for a term of not less than 30 days. In this case, the principal of the Certificate of Deposit would be paid to the presenter, while the interest would be paid to the Cincinnati Clearing House Association. Hessler lists only the Baltimore $1,000, the New York $5,000, and the Cincinnati $10,000. The remainder Cincinnati $5,000 in this lot has seven POCs. PCGS mentions mounting remnants and left edge damage. Also, the lower right corner is missing mostly beyond the frame line. This is our first time to auction a Hessler X134D example or any similar piece of the denomination. This note first appeared in the auction of the American Bank Note Company archives as part of lot 1221 held in November 1990.
