Fr. 167a $100 1863 Legal Tender PMG About Uncirculated 53.
The Track & Price Census population for Fr. 167a is only 23 serial numbers, but five of those have found their way into the collections of the Smithsonian Institution (2), the ANA Museum, and one each in the collections of the Federal Reserve Banks of Chicago and Kansas City. That leaves a mere 18 examples to satisfy the needs of collectors. Also, eleven of this Friedberg number have been examined by PMG, with the piece in this lot alone as the fourth highest graded example. It has been off the market since our consignor won it out of a 1991 auction. That has certainly proved to be a judicious purchase over the intervening years. Our most recent experience with the last Friedberg number for this Spread Eagle design was in November 2020 when a PMG 35 example with a restoration realized $87,000. Also, the highest graded Fr. 167a by a major grading service to be a part of our auctions was a PCGS Currency Choice New 63 comment-free example that flew to $305,500 in January 2013. As we take in all of those facts, we believe that our current offering should hammer somewhere in the middle of those two earlier figures. Pinholes are cited on the back label and it took us an inordinate amount of time to find.
