Description

Parker-Burke Fr. 119 Bison in Gem

Fr. 119 $10 1901 Legal Tender PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
A well preserved EPQ Bison with embossing of the Treasury seal, serial number, and large "X" counter observed on the back in the two unprinted archway areas. Other traits are ideal inks, white paper, and being well centered. This example is part of a run of Fr. 119 notes that has earned, for the most part, Uncirculated grades. Merriwether Lewis and William Clark led the Corps of Discovery on the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase as they traveled from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean and back during the years of 1804-06. Lewis became the second governor of the Missouri Territory. At age 35, he was either murdered or committed suicide on October 11, 1809, in Hickman County, Tennessee, while on a trip to Washington, DC. William Clark would go on to become the fourth governor of the Missouri Territory from July 1, 1813 to September 18, 1820. Clark died in St. Louis on September 1, 1838, at the age of 68. The Bison design with the portraits of Lewis and Clark is believed by many to be a commemorative design celebrating the Corps of Discovery and their achievements.
