Description

One of Two Notes Reported - First Offering Since 2001

Wharton, TX - $10 1902 Date Back Fr. 616 The Wharton National Bank Ch. # (S)6313 PMG Very Fine 20.
This small community near Texas' Gulf Coast has always been one of the most difficult locations from which to obtain a National Bank Note. It had just two issuers - the First National, which was only in business for six months in 1893 and which remains unreported, and the Wharton National, which issued just a handful of Red Seals and Date Backs during its brief existence from 1902 to 1918. Just two notes have been reported from here, only one of which has ever been publicly offered. That is the note we are pleased to present tonight. Last on the market when we auctioned The Steve Ivy Collection in 2001, it is a crisp, pen-signed Date Back with nice color and just some staining on its face. A great Texas rarity that is available for the first time in almost a quarter-century.
