Description

Unique for the Bank & Town - And a Serial Number 1 as Well

Serial Number 1 Velasco, TX - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 485 The Velasco National Bank Ch. # 4662 PMG Very Fine 30.
This short-lived bank issued a mere 894 sheets of $10 and $20 Brown Backs before it closed in March of 1904, a victim of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which wrecked the town and dropped its population from over 3,000 to barely one-third that number. Velasco no longer even exists, having been annexed by the city of Freeport in 1957. This Serial Number 1 $10 Brown Back, which is the only example known from both the bank and the town, made its last public appearance in our 2010 Memphis auction where it fetched a solid $37,375. Now, the market has considerably changed in the intervening fifteen years, but this note is still as beautiful and unique as it was the last time it crossed the auction block. For the collector who desires and can afford the very best, this is a note for you.
