Beautiful and Rare Brotherhood NB of Portland Small Size

Portland, OR - $5 1929 Ty. 1 Brotherhood National Bank Ch. # 12613 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
This institution began life as a bank organized by labor unions, especially those unions representing railroad employees (hence the "Brotherhood" wording.) Like many of these institutions which were formed during the mid to late 1920's, management capabilities were limited, and the quality of loans dubious at best. With the onset of the Depression, and the shrinking of the railway labor force, many of these institutions faced financial ruin, with this bank in much the same situation. This is just the third note to be reported with this bank's second title which was used by this charter for a mere five months in the latter half of 1929. Easily the finest of the now-three pieces reported, it is a crisp, well embossed $5 that is only held back in grade by a tight left margin.
