Serial Number 1 Westfield, NY $5 Brown Back

Serial Number 1 Westfield, NY - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 467 The National Bank of Westfield Ch. # 3166 PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ.
A boldly inked and original $5 Brown Back, this piece comes from the first sheet of notes that were issued by this far western New York bank after it opened its doors in 1884. Three of this bank's Serial Number 1 $5s are recorded in the census, with tonight's offering the "A" or top note from the sheet. It traces its provenance to a 1976 Bill Donlon sale and was probably Lot 1604 in Barney Bluestone's sale of The Albert Grinnell Collection in 1945, though the plate letter was not specified. Aside from a couple of very light folds, it is as pretty as the day it was signed by the bank's officers and displays its full, original colors.
