Attractive and Rare Series 1875 $50

New York, NY - $50 1875 Fr. 445 The Metropolitan National Bank Ch. # 1121 PCGS Banknote Choice VF 35.
This very attractive example of a significant National Bank Note rarity is one of just 70 Series 1875 $50s reported for all banks in the entire country, several of which are locked away in institutional collections. The finest of three such pieces reported from this short-lived New York City bank that closed its doors in 1884, it is also one of the better survivors for the entire country as many of the known notes are well circulated and/or have serious flaws. That is not the case with this pretty, well margined note that has excellent color, dark pen signatures, and loads of eye appeal. The vignette of the Embarkation of the Pilgrims on the back is especially quite vivid. Its only flaw, if it can be called that, is just some closed pinholes which truly affect nothing. By way of comparison, we auctioned a 1875 $50 from a Danville, IL, bank, in a comment-free PMG Very Fine 30 holder, last year for $55,200.
