First Montana Red Seal Offering in Over a Decade

Miles City, MT - $10 1902 Red Seal Fr. 613 The First National Bank Ch. # (W)2752 PCGS Banknote Very Good 10.
At the turn of the century, Miles City was still a small town, with only 1,938 residents according to the 1900 census. While the population more than doubled by 1910, a severe drought starting in 1917 changed the trajectory of the town, hastening economic hardship before the Great Depression even started. The First National Bank was liquidated in 1924, succeeded by the First National Bank IN Miles City, Charter 12536.

It is important to note the successor bank, as they assumed the circulation of this bank, and very quickly pulled in outstanding notes. Just one Red Seal is known to exist from Miles City, one of only 14 examples for all denominations. The last offering for any of the known Red Seals was over twelve years ago. The present example has been off the market for two decades. No survivors are known about the Very Fine grade range, and this piece, has a pleasant look for the grade, with a still strong third printing. With such a long drought of Red Seals from Montana, expect our estimate to be quickly surpassed.
