Excessively Rare North Dakota $100 Brown Back - One of Two Reported

Grand Forks, ND - $100 1882 Brown Back Fr. 530 The First National Bank Ch. # (W)2570 PMG Very Fine 30.
This is certainly one of the highlights of the selection of great North Dakota notes that we are offering this evening. Four banks in this state issued a total of mere 1,950 $100 Brown Backs between them and, not surprisingly, just two are listed as surviving in the National Currency Foundation census - both from this Grand Forks bank. However, one of that pair has not been seen since its last appearance in a 1976 Hickman-Oakes sale leaving tonight's offering as the only viable option for today's generation of collectors. Fortunately, it is a most attractive pen-signed piece with bright paper, bold ink colors, and loads of eye appeal. PMG has mentioned a corner repair, but nothing is readily apparent through the holder. In its last public appearance in a 2016 auction, this pretty note fetched $21,150. Considering the recent demand for better North Dakota material, this true trophy note has the potential to reach or exceed that number again.
