Charlestown, MA - $10 1875 Fr. 417 The Monument National Bank
Ch. # 1005 PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ.A simply spectacular note, this Superb Gem is from a rare Massachusetts bank which issued First Charters and Brown Backs only before liquidating in 1905. The census shows just six examples extant, including this piece, which is one of three Series 1875 tens from the same sheet. This plate letter "D" note is, by far, the finest from that cut sheet as it is truly a wonder note, with near perfect face centering, fantastic color, gorgeous pen signatures, incredible eye appeal and great historical significance, as its title refers to the Bunker Hill memorial monument in Charlestown. This example has been off the market since it last sold in a 1990 Smythe sale (where it was called merely "Choice"). This is certainly the finest example of this type and denomination to ever appear in one of our auctions. It is, in fact, the only 67-graded 1875 $10 that we are aware of, as PMG has not graded a note above the 66 level. With a 65-graded example from one of the hoard banks from Illinois or Ohio breaking the five-figure mark at auction, any estimate is simply a guess for a note of this magnitude. Certainly fit for the finest of collections, this trophy note should easily achieve multiples of that number.
