Description

Serial Number 1 Crocker-Woolworth NB $10 Brown Back

Serial Number 1 San Francisco, CA - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 482 The Crocker-Woolworth National Bank Ch. # 3555 PMG Very Fine 30.
This great Serial Number 1 $10 Brown Back from this famous San Francisco bank is being publicly offered for the first time. From the first sheet issued by this charter after it opened its doors in 1886, it bears the bold pen signatures of cashier William H. Crocker and president Ralph Woodworth. Crocker was the son of Charles Crocker, a railroad tycoon who had acquired a controlling interest in this bank. Woolworth had served as cashier, and later president, of the First National Gold Bank of San Francisco before joining forces with the Crocker family to start the Crocker-Woolworth National. This pretty note, which represents the scarce early variety of $10 Brown Backs with a vertical charter number, retains all of its original ink colors with just some light storage folds observed. It is also one of just five Serial Number 1 $10 Brown Backs reported for all California banks. This is a very impressive note for either the California or Brown Back specialist.
