Scarce Commonwealth of Virginia $50

Richmond, VA- Commonwealth of Virginia $50 Aug. 13, 1861 Cr. 2 Jones-Littlefield VT02-08 PMG Choice About Unc 58.
This rare note was part of Virginia's first true war issue, authorized by the Act of April 30, 1861. Hoyer & Ludwig received the contract to produce these notes. This attractive red and black lithographed note features two allegorical women by a large urn flanked by a large rendition of the Virginia coat of arms at left and and oval portrait of John Tyler at right. A large red denominational protector and other red security elements complete the design. 12,300 $50s were issued and by late 1863 only 268 remained extant. In 2006, Hugh Shull estimated that there were 16-50 remaining $50 survivors. PMG comments previously mounted.
