Description
Charlottesville, VA- Monticello Bank $5 July 1, 1861 G12a Jones-Littlefield BC25-13A PMG Very Fine 30.The bank was organized as a Free, or so-called Independent, Bank in 1853. Almost alone among the state's banks, it survived the Civil War and became the Charlottesville National Bank in July 1865. Although virtually all of the state's Independent Banks stopped issuing notes secured by state bonds during the course of 1860-61, the bank decided to continue issuing the notes it had in inventory with the state treasurer's countersignature space simply left blank. The registered $5 design incorporates the state banking die and a vignette of three putti with the Stars and Stripes at right. The bank also issued redesigned $5s without the countersignature space and state banking die and different vignettes at right which are far more common. Jones estimates a small surviving population of between 5 and 10 examples. This estimate is pretty much borne out by the four notes known to us at present, all with serial numbers under 50.
