Description

Houston, TX- Consolidated Fund of Texas $5,000 March 1, 1839 Cr. CF6A PCGS Banknote Uncirculated 62.
Part of an emission authorized on June 7, 1837, this large denomination note was issued to consolidate and fund the public debt. The note bore an attractive 10% interest rate. This note was payable to McKinney & Williams, the Galveston commission merchant firm that had provided significant financial support for the Texas Revolution, and was subsequently given authority, as a private business, to issue scrip. The note is in excellent condition on bright paper with sharply printed and penned details. There is a large cut cancel that has not resulted in any paper loss or shrinkage. Very Rare, with Shull estimating a surviving population of around 5-15 examples which, considering the high face value and interest rate, seems quite reasonable. We just auctioned another example of this note, just two serial numbers removed, for $4,200 in our October 2025 GACC U.S. Currency Signature Auction.
