Most Attractive, Rare Republic of Texas $500
Houston, TX- Republic of Texas $500 Sep.(?) 15, 1838 Cr. H12
Medlar 47 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.The prohibitively rare note in this lot was authorized under the Act of Congress (of the Republic of Texas) of June 9, 1837, and is a representative of the very first emission of the Republic. It was payable twelve months after the issuance date, paying ten percent interest rate. At far left, the words "REPUBLIC OF TEXAS." are featured in a decorative panel while at center, a large white Lone Star is flanked by a "500" counter at left and a "D" counter at right. At far right is another decorative panel containing the text "FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS." Hugh Shull places this piece's rarity at R10 (5-15 examples known) and we are currently aware of the plate note in Shull's book as well as five other notes of this design and denomination. We have offered just five notes of this variation in our auctions prior to now. The example most comparable in condition to our current offering, an impaired Extremely Fine 45 note that we auctioned in 2015, realizing $7,638. We expect this piece will attain, if not outperform, that figure. While PMG mentions the usual cut cancellations as well as subtle evidence of previous mounting and a bit of ink burn, this example is the nicest piece we have offered for this Criswell number.
