Description

Hallettsville, TX- Lavaca County $5 Nov. 18, 1862 Medlar 11 PMG Choice Fine 15.
The county, which was formed in 1846, issued this series in 1862. Interestingly, the note was "good for five dollars in payment of County dues during the war, and fundable in Confederate Notes after a ratification of a treaty of peace." While that "sounded like a plan" in 1862, subsequent events would, of course, make it completely unworkable by the war's end when Confederate currency was completely worthless. The note is attractively printed in three colors, with black text, a green left end panel containing the serial number and a green and red 5 end panel at right, as well as a large red hollow letter FIVE protector. While we have handled a number of notes from the county over the years, surprisingly, this is the first $5.
