Description

T15 $50 1861 PF-1 Cr. 79 PMG Very Fine 25.
Southern Bank Note Company produced this wonderful $50 design as part of a series of four notes, a companion $20, $10, and $5, that were printed on a single four subject sheet. 14,860 examples were issued before the fall of New Orleans in late April 1862 put an emphatic end to production (apparently the plates were not evacuated from the city). The design features a large train vignette flanked by vignettes of Justice at right and an allegorical woman representing perhaps Hope or Navigation at left. The note is a pleasant mid-grade example that is uncancelled, printed on bright paper, with well printed design details that, significantly, include an unoxidized red-orange protector.
