Description
Serial Number 1 "Extremely Rare" Cr. 40K Bond
Serial Number 1 Austin, TX- Republic of Texas Government Bond
$100 Oct. 15, 1840 Cr. 40K PMG Very Fine 30.The Act of February 5, 1840 authorized a number of bonds, most of which are somewhat regularly seen in public auctions from time to time. That does not appear to be the case with this $100 bond, simply printed by Whiting's Press, and issued on October 15, 1840. The end panels on the bond feature a ship under full sail at left and Liberty as seen on the Seated Liberty coin designs of the day. All ten bond coupons remain attached and the bond has six triangular cancels as well as edge splits in the folds that do not extend into the printed portions of the design. Criswell records this bond as his Cr. 40K, listing it as simply Extremely Rare. Adding some interest is that this bond carries Serial Number 1. This marks the first time we have offered this type. We will place a conservative low estimate on this piece and let the market establish its value in today's market.
