Description

Unlisted Telegraph Company Issuer

Houston, TX- Texas Telegraph Co. $2 Mar. 1, 1862 Medlar UNL PMG Very Fine 20.
C.C. Clute, who signed this note as Treasurer, was General Superintendent of the Texas and Red River Telegraph Company in August 1853 and General Agent of the New Orleans, Red River and Texas Telegraph Company in January 1854. While your cataloger has found no direct documentation on the Texas Telegraph Co. to date, the presence of C.C. Clute's signature certainly suggests that the Texas Telegraph Co. banner was used by either a later consolidation of the two earlier companies or by perhaps a smaller local competitor. This is a rare instance where Medlar has no listing for the company in any form. The note has the iconic Texas Lone Star at top center flanked by two decorative end panels and is printed on the back of a pre-war stock certificate. An excessively rare and historic note that is fully issued, repair-free, with no meaningful impairments noted. Advanced Texas collectors are sure to take notice of this note.
